When You Forget What to Say Next — Keep Speaking Naturally
(How to stay calm, use rescue phrases, and keep your English flowing)
1) Why This Happens
Blank moments happen to everyone — even fluent speakers. The goal isn’t to avoid pauses; it’s to own them. Use calm, natural phrases to buy time while your brain finds the words.
- Fluency = continuing smoothly, not speaking fast.
- Short pauses + confident tone sound thoughtful.
- Rescue phrases help you relax and keep going.
2) Useful “Rescue” Phrases
Simple pauses
- Hmm, let me think…
- Just a second…
- What’s the word…?
Natural fillers
- That’s a good question.
- Let me see how to say this…
- Well, actually…
- You know…
- So basically…
Re-starting your sentence
- What I mean is…
- Another way to say it is…
- Let me put it this way…
3) The 3-Second Trick
When your mind goes blank, use this quick reset to stay in control.
1) Pause — take a calm breath.
2) Use a rescue phrase (“Let me think…”).
3) Continue naturally — or ask a simple question back.
Example: “My favorite place is… hmm, let me think… oh! Italy.”
4) Quick Role Play
Partner A: Ask a question (e.g., “What do you usually do on weekends?”)
Partner B: Answer but must use one rescue phrase before finishing.
Switch roles and try 5 topics: travel, hobbies, daily routine, movies, goals.
5) Challenge for You
- Use one rescue phrase in a real conversation today.
- Note what you said and how the other person reacted.
- Share one example in the Online English Café.
6) Confidence Tip
Tip: Don’t rush to fill silence. Pauses are normal. Use one short phrase, then continue — you’ll sound calm and clear.
7) Final Reminder
Fluency isn’t about zero pauses — it’s about confident pauses. Own the silence, guide the moment, keep speaking.
