1) Why Showing Interest Matters

Good conversations are not only about your answers. They’re about how you react to the other person. When you show interest, people feel comfortable, keep talking, and want to speak with you again. This is a powerful way to sound confident in English.

Tip: If you don’t understand something, don’t panic. Say “Oh really?” or “That’s interesting.” Then ask for clarification.

2) 10 Phrases to Show Interest

Practice each phrase out loud (3×), then try it in a short conversation.

3) Practice Activity — Role Play

  1. Partner A shares a short story: “I tried a new café yesterday.”
  2. Partner B responds with an interest phrase: “Oh really? What was it like?”
  3. Switch roles.
  4. Continue until both partners use at least 3 different interest phrases.
Tip for learners: If you don’t understand, you can still respond:
• “Oh really? Can you say that again?”
• “Interesting! What does that mean?”

4) Challenge for You

In the next 7 days, use at least 3 interest phrases in a real conversation. Write them in your notebook or share them in the Café after you try.

5) Final Reminder

Confidence grows when you make the other person feel heard. The more you show interest, the easier it becomes to keep conversations alive.

Remember: Even simple reactions like “Wow” or “Really?” show you are listening. You don’t need perfect grammar to make a great impression.
