How to talk about your daily rituals

The small things we do every day shape our lives. Learn how to talk about yours in simple, natural English.

The topic

Everyone has small daily habits. A cup of coffee in the morning, a short walk, a quiet moment before bed. These little rituals give shape to our days. This topic is about the routines that matter to you.

You do not need long or difficult sentences. Say what your day looks like in simple words, and let each small habit tell its own little story.

Start here

Say these answers out loud

One sentence per question. Do not write first. Just speak.

  • What is the first thing you do in the morning?
  • Do you have a small daily ritual that you love?
  • How do you end your day?

Stuck? Start with: "Every morning I always..." Say whatever comes to mind.

Useful words and phrases

Choose 2 or 3 that fit how you talk about this topic.

a routinethings you do regularly"I have a simple morning routine."
a rituala small action that feels special"My coffee is a daily ritual."
to wake upto stop sleeping"I wake up at six o’clock."
calmquiet and relaxed"It keeps me calm."
on purposesomething you choose to do, not by accident"I do it on purpose, every day."
to unwindto relax before sleep"I unwind with a book."
The key idea

Small habits are easy to talk about

You do not need a big story. Pick one small habit, say what you do, and add why it matters to you. That is already a natural answer.

  • Name the habit. "Every morning I make coffee."
  • Add when or how. "I do it before anyone else wakes up."
  • Say why it matters. "It gives me a calm start to the day."
Speaking practice

Choose 3 to 5 of these

Answer out loud. 30 to 60 seconds per question. Do not write. Just speak.

  • Are you a morning person or an evening person?
  • Which small habit makes your day better?
  • Has your daily routine changed over the last few years?
  • What do you do to relax at the end of the day?
  • If you could add one ritual to your day, which would it be?

Small action for this week

Do one small ritual on purpose this week and notice how it feels. Just once this week. That is enough.

Beginner A2

Short sentences are fine. Talk simply about your day.

the morningthe start of the day"I drink tea in the morning."
to wake upto stop sleeping"I wake up early."
every dayon all days"I do this every day."
coffeea warm drink"I need my coffee."
to sleepto rest at night"I go to sleep at eleven."

Practice questions

Speak for 30 to 60 seconds per question.

  • What time do you wake up?
  • What is the first thing you do in the morning?
  • Do you drink coffee or tea?
  • What do you do before you sleep?
  • Do you like the morning?
Which sentence is correct? a) "I wake up early." b) "I early wake up." c) "I wakes up early." Sentence a is correct. In b the word order is wrong, and in c the verb form is wrong. With "I," use "wake," not "wakes."

Intermediate B1

You can already speak simply. Now practise describing, comparing, and giving your opinion.

a habitsomething you do often"It became a daily habit."
to stick toto keep doing something"I try to stick to my routine."
productivegetting a lot done"A good morning makes me productive."
screen timetime on your phone or computer"I want less screen time in the evening."
to rechargeto get your energy back"A walk helps me recharge."

Practice questions

Speak for 30 to 60 seconds per question.

  • How does your morning affect the rest of your day?
  • Which habit would you like to start or stop?
  • Do routines help you or limit you? Why?
  • How do you relax after a busy day?
  • Tell me about a habit that really changed your life.
Fix the mistake in each sentence: 1. "I have this habit since five years." 2. "My routine is more good now." 3. "I walk every day because it makes me calm... no wait, because it me calm makes." 1: "I have had this habit for five years." Use the present perfect with "for" and a length of time. 2: "My routine is better now." Use "better," not "more good." 3: "...because it makes me calm." Keep normal word order after "because."

Advanced B2

Now you speak with more detail and your own reflection.

a ritualan action with personal meaning"My evening walk is almost a ritual."
mindfulfully present in the moment"I try to be mindful in the morning."
an anchorsomething that gives you stability"My routine is an anchor in a busy life."
intentionaldone with a clear purpose"I want my mornings to be intentional."
groundingit helps you feel calm and steady"This habit is grounding for me."

Practice questions

Speak for 30 to 60 seconds per question.

  • Why are small rituals so important for our wellbeing?
  • Is a fixed routine freeing or limiting?
  • How do our habits shape who we become over the years?
  • Which ritual would you never give up, and why?
Which sentence sounds the most natural? a) "My routine is good and I like it." b) "These small rituals seem ordinary, but they quietly hold my days together." c) "I do the same things and it is nice." Sentence b is B2: it has nuance, a more complex structure, and personal reflection. Sentences a and c are correct but simpler.

Self-check

Check the main idea

  • What is the difference between a routine and a ritual for you?
  • Which small habit shapes your day the most?
  • Say one sentence about your morning using a word from the advanced list.
  • Has one of your routines changed over time? How?
  • Which ritual would you never give up, and why?
